Reflextherapy
Reflextherapy (reflexology) is a treatment approach that has developed from the theory that the body is reflected in miniature in the feet, hands and other areas – such as the ears, head and spine. It is thought that the use of acupressure on the reflected points stimulates the nervous, endocrine and circulatory systems to affect the corresponding area in the body. Gentle pressure on these areas can promote deep relaxation and pain relief, and assists the healing processes.
The art of reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China. However, it was in 1913 that Dr. William Fitzgerald, an American ear nose and throat surgeon, discovered and developed the form of this therapy known as 'zone therapy'. In zone therapy, reflex areas on the feet and hands are considered be linked to other areas and organs of the body within the same zone. Dr Fitzgerald used these points as a form of anaesthesia.
It was Eunice Ingham, in the 1930’s that further developed the technique into what is now known as reflexology.
Reflextherapy is ideal for those seeking relief from symptoms associated with a wide variety of disorders. For example:
Acute or chronic back or neck pain.
Arthritic pain.
Migraine and headaches.
Respiratory conditions. (e.g. asthma)
Stress and stress related disorders.
Chronic fatigue.
Soft tissue and sports injuries.
Heath maintenance.
